Astute Graphics policy on licensing and installation on second computers

Additional license header image

Since the introduction of the new Astute Graphics licensing system in Phantasm CS version 2, it has provided customers the significant benefit of being able to transfer licenses, change between operating systems and Illustrator CS3, CS4 and CS5 without the need to purchase license upgrades. The recently-launched VectorScribe plugin for Adobe Illustrator also uses the same licensing system, providing the same benefits to users.

Astute Graphics’ policy towards the installation of a plugin on a secondary computer was originally outlined in this earlier post. However, since the launch of VectorScribe, we will clarify the situation with installing a license on a secondary computer in this article; the following applies to both Phantasm CS version 2 and VectorScribe.

Computer Arts issue 188 coverDue to all the work associated with the launch of VectorScribe, the latest issue (June 2011, issue 188) of the UK-based Computer Arts magazine had been gathering dust. But we finally got around to a quick read and were very pleased to see Phantasm CS Studio v2, which was only launched under two months ago, receive a mention.

In the “Need to Know” section (page 97) the latest edition covers “Advancing Illustrator”. WIthin this page, nine plugins are listed including Phantasm CS. To pick a quote:

…adds some serious prepress weight to Illustrator’s arsenal.

Quite.

Thanks go to Computer Arts.

Vector Mill website

There are many vector resources out there for Illustrator users, including a wide range of vector “clip art” sites. However, our attention has just been brought over to one which really stands out from the crowd; Vector Mill by Ryan Putnam (he of Vectips website fame). What sets Vector Mill apart from many of the others is that Ryan’s work is original, modern and includes extras geared directly towards Adobe Illustrator users.

“Sneak peek” of new Illustrator tools movie

Vector Paparazzi movie

A friend’s tweet this morning provided a link to an interesting movie recently posted on Youtube described as a “sneak peek” of new Illustrator tools. Whether these tools are in a future version of Illustrator or as a plugin is not clear. But it’s worth watching none-the-less as it shows how editable shapes and path corners could be implemented – something we’ve always wanted.

The movie can be found here: www.youtube.com/user/vectorpaparazzi

Update…

Just noticed that around 2:25, the Effects menu lists our very own Phantasm CS plugin! We’re now rating this movie higher ;-)

Whether it’s a full version of our plugin or the 7 day Trial version, is uncertain.

Using Illustrator in the fashion industry

Fashion Classroom movie - pattern control

Here at Astute Graphics Hovel Towers, we are the first to admit that we’re not fashionable. Fashion is something reserved for those referred to as “dudes” (and “dudettes”?). However, we can all aspire…

But one aspect of fashion that is increasingly taking our interest is the widespread use of Adobe Illustrator in the fashion design industry. And we acknowledge it’s a very significant industry; we should know as some of our most well-known customers include Nike, Esprit and Nordica. Just as we concentrated on solving workflow issue within the pre-press, packaging and flexo industry when developing Phantasm CS Publisher version 2, we are now expanding our horizons to include other industries.

App Store and Plug-ins

App Store and plugins

With the very recent and public launch of Apple’s new App Store, a wealth of great Mac OS applications come within very easy reach of millions of users. It’s a very neatly implemented application, as we have come to expect from Apple, and largely does exactly what it says on the tin.

However, for Astute Graphics, and many other developers there are some significant clauses which prevent our products from appearing in Apple’s new third party storefront. The major clause from our own point of view is that Apple states all products made available via their system must install into the Applications folder and be self-contained. The very nature of plugins ensures that we can not comply with this. Therefore Astute Graphics’ plugin products are never likely to appear within the App Store unless further developments from Apple allow this.

Another issue we personally see with the App Store is the inability to offer a trial version. Autodesk offer a wonderful application now available at a very reasonable price via the App Store called SketchBookPro. They get around this issue by offering an Express version which has some key features removed, but it remains of great use to casual users. It also entices them to upgrade to the Pro version by simply being good at what it does.

And will we ever see Adobe Illustrator on the App Store for $19.99? Unlikely. Even if they did suddenly offer a 95% sale, their licensing system (as with many other developers) would preclude them from participating.

This post is not bemoaning what they have achieved; we will continue to look at Apple’s developments in this market with interest and do our part to consider options for future participation on the new wave of software retail.

Adobe Illustrator CS5 HTML5 Pack testing

HTML5 for Adobe Illustrator title

If you follow the developments of Adobe Illustrator, you will have undoubtably come across Adobe’s relatively recent unusual gesture of providing additional functionality between major Creative Suite releases. Even though released under the “Adobe Labs” title (think Google and their seemingly eternal “Beta” releases) we can’t think of a similar precedence to Adobe’s release of the Adobe Illustrator CS5 HTML5 Pack. Adobe has to be commended for taking this step.

Astute Graphics aren’t web development experts but have sufficient knowledge to conduct some initial experiments with the new pack. Of particular interest, especially considering that we are going through our own internal testing cycle (hence the current rolling tumbleweed on this blog!) was the new pack’s interaction with Phantasm CS’ live Effect color adjustments.

Creating some new demonstration artwork

Rocket title image

Here at Astute Graphics Towers, we always try to demonstrate our Illustrator solutions with relevant artwork examples. Sometimes we use example artwork supplied with Adobe Illustrator, such as Vonster’s fantastic Loyal Order of Wormwood which appeared with Illustrator CS4. Other times we create very technical and targeted Illustrator files such as the Drink Carton example (PDF may be found here). However, occasionally new eye-catching artwork is required for specific demonstrations… which is what happened recently.
